Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) has partnered with network provider Oceus to jointly develop a 5G broadband kit for maritime defense.
The three-year agreement will see the companies produce Remote Connect, a secure 5G-based network enabling maritime defense customers to access remote connectivity through any device.
The solution can provide sailors with 5G communications in remote international areas or regions with high interference.
Once deployed, the platform is expected to sustain mission-critical communications while addressing essential ship repairs.
“Secure, reliable connectivity is essential for the Navy as the fleet grows and its demand for transmitting data expands,” Oceus Strategy Officer and Chief of Growth Paul McQuillan stated.
“FMD has a strong network throughout the Navy, Military Sealift Command, and the Coast Guard, which makes them an ideal collaborator to help us expand this technology for mission-critical maritime defense.”
Remote Connect 5G Broadband Kit
Remote Connect is designed with a ruggedized, lightweight case for portability and can be easily deployed with a single push-button startup.
The battery-powered kit can run for up to eight hours of active use. Upon launch, users can access a Wi-Fi connection through a secure 5G cellular modem and gateway in minutes.
For the collaboration, Oceus will leverage its experience in providing governments and enterprises with private 5G communications for austere environments.
The company’s patented technology “intelligently” optimizes and maintains the “peak performance” of private 5G networks.
“Remote Connect will amplify our FM OnBoard technology, allowing technicians who are working in the engine room and other lower decks to have the same reliable connectivity that is available topside,” FMD Vice President Keith Haasl said.
“This means they can work with FMD’s remote technicians to monitor assets, detect anomalies, and troubleshoot issues from anywhere in the world without losing their connection.”
