Austria Procures 36 Vehicle-Mounted Rheinmetall Air Defense Systems

Austria has procured 36 Skyranger mobile air defense systems for its Pandur wheeled armored vehicles, 225 of which have been contracted from General Dynamics European Land Systems.

Worth a “figure in the mid-three-digit million-euro range,” the Rheinmetall system delivery will start in 2026.

Skyranger Air Defense System

The system’s versatile turret combines a state-of-the-art sensor suite with a 30mm automatic cannon and Mistral guided missiles.

The cannon fires 1,200 rounds per minute with an effective range of 3 kilometers (1.86 miles).

It also features a command system that provides a local picture for threat evaluation.

It has been developed to counter aerial threats such as drones, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and loitering munitions.

Other Skyranger Countries

The purchase follows Austria’s decision to upgrade its stationary 35mm Skyguard Next Generation system for 532 million euros ($576 million).

Austria is the third country after Germany and Hungary to procure the system.

Denmark has also selected the system to address its air defense requirements.
