Rheinmetall to Supply Spain With 104,000 Mortar Rounds

Rheinmetall has signed a double-digit million euro deal with Spain to supply the Spanish Army with 104,000 mortar rounds.

The package will consist of 60mm-, 81mm-, and 120mm-caliber rounds, and is set to be delivered by the end of 2025.

The rounds have ranges from 1.6 to 5 miles (2.6 to 8.3 kilometers).

Spain plans to provide the ammunition to its infantry units to enhance their ground warfare capabilities.

The agreement comes just days after a 208-million euro ($227 million) deal was signed by the two parties for the handover of 94,200 ER02A1 155mm rounds. Rheinmetall said the order underlines the company’s leading role as a systems supplier of steep-fire systems.

Supplying Europe’s Ammo

Rheinmetall has teamed up with the EU to ramp up its ammo production to address scarcity issues brought on by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

An estimated 130 million euros ($140 million) will be used to bolster its Germany, Hungary, Romania, and Spain manufacturing lines, in turn supporting the European Commission’s goal of producing 2 million shells before 2026.

Last month, the group also marked its first rocket artillery sale by signing a contract to supply an unnamed NATO member with 300 million euros ($326 million) worth of rocket launcher ammunition.
