L3Harris Selects Garmin Flight Deck for US Sky Wardens

L3Harris Technologies has awarded Garmin International a contract to supply its G3000 tandem integrated flight deck for the US Special Operations Command’s Armed Overwatch program.

The latest agreement builds on a $170 million Sky Warden contract awarded to L3Harris and Air Tractor in August for a sustainable single-engine fixed-wing combat aircraft.

The companies will deliver up to 75 AT-802U Sky Warden intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) strike units throughout the program.

“Sky Warden features a cutting-edge flight deck and open mission system interfaces to support integration of future technologies for the Armed Overwatch program,” L3Harris ISR President Luke Savoie said.

“We’ve collaborated with Garmin for years and look forward to continuing our strategic relationship to enhance warfighter capabilities.”

Garmin’s G3000

The G3000 offers the latest navigation, communication, and air traffic management with a commercial off-the-shelf open architecture design.

The night vision goggle-compatible flight deck uses a touch-screen interface to control sensors, weapon systems, surveillance, and transmissions integrated by L3Harris.

It includes a traffic collision avoidance system, automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast traffic, terrain awareness, and a warning system.

The G3000 also works with Garmin’s GFC 700 digital autopilot to generate configurable search and rescue patterns.

“Our strategic relationship with L3Harris integrates the open system architecture G3000 flight deck as a critical enabler for Sky Warden’s close air support and armed ISR mission,” Garmin Aviation Sales and Marketing Vice President Carl Wolf said.

“Garmin has an established history of supplying innovative, forward-looking avionics to militaries across the globe and we are honored to have our G3000 integrated flight deck support the U.S. Special Forces.”

Other Armed Overwatch Contracts

Alongside Garmin, L3Harris has collaborated with other companies to support the US military’s Armed Overwatch program.

In October, L3Harris selected ZMicro to integrate two of its ZM3 ultra-lightweight rugged computing solutions into each Sky Warden aircraft.

Meanwhile, the Moog Space and Defense Group will provide its weapon stores management system for “superior fire-control and mission set capabilities” in the program.
