UK to Develop Hypersonic Weapons Demonstrator

The UK Ministry of Defence plans to develop a weapons demonstrator that can operate at hypersonic speed.

The plan is part of two billion pounds ($2.5 billion) in research funding for programs that provide “generation-after-next” military capabilities between 2022 and 2026.

The ministry stated that the cutting-edge weapons demonstrator would help the British military deter future threats without providing specific details.

“We are investing record amounts across our science and technology portfolio to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of innovation and sustains its strategic advantage over our adversaries,” British Minister for Defence Procurement Jeremy Quin said in a press release.

In addition to the weapons demonstrator, the funding covers a plan to expand research on artificial intelligence to determine how it can benefit soldiers on various military missions.

The European nation also plans to invest in bolstering its capabilities in space, as well as enhancing its intelligence, communication, and surveillance.
