US Navy Orders Digital ‘Friend-or-Foe’ Technology From BAE Systems

BAE Systems has secured a $15-million contract to deliver its AN/UPX-50(C) next-generation friend-or-foe interrogator for US Navy vessels.

AN/UPX-50(C) enables time-critical insights that reduce friendly fire incidents and sustain mission success in hostile environments.

The modernized digital interrogator is built with a common modular design and open systems architecture to incorporate related technologies without replacing the hardware configuration.

The capability applies two different modes depending on user requirements for secure and encrypted data exchange.

A third receive channel can be used for passive acquisition of automatic dependent surveillance to support enhanced situational awareness for soldiers.

Work for the contract will be facilitated in Greenlawn, New York.

“The flexibility of our design provides high performance without changes to existing fleet infrastructure – getting critical system updates to the warfighter faster,” BAE Tactical Systems Director Donna Linke-Klein stated.

“This investment will accommodate IFF technology growth for several decades to best equip the US Navy in the evolving battlespace.”
