The US Navy Sea Systems Command has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $532.9 million contract modification to support its Virginia-class attack submarine program.
The agreement orders the lead-yard support, research, and design services for the underwater vehicle.
Works for the contract will be performed in Groton, Connecticut and Newport News, Virginia, and is expected to be completed by 2023.
The contract includes options that could bring the total value of the modification to nearly $814 million.
The latest agreement follows a contract previously awarded to the company for the Virginia-class program.
“We are proud to continue to support the design and engineering of Virginia-class submarines to ensure they have the superior warfighting capabilities the US Navy needs to defend our nation,” General Dynamics Electric Boat President Kevin Graney said.
“The continued evolution of the Virginia class over the last two decades guarantees our sailors the asymmetric advantage they deserve.”
Growing Virginia-Class Submarines in US Navy
The continuous development of the Virginia-class submarines supports the replacement of the US Navy’s aging Los Angeles class.
Virginia-class submarines were built with innovations aimed to “significantly enhance its warfighting capabilities” during coastal and littoral missions, according to the navy.
In March, General Dynamics Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries Newport News Shipbuilding delivered the 10th Virginia-class submarine to the US Navy.
To date, there are 19 Virginia-class commissioned by the navy.
