The US Marine Corps has conducted operational testing and evaluation of the joint air-to-ground missile mounted on an AH-1Z Viper helicopter.
According to a service press release, the trial was held to determine the effectiveness and suitability of the missile system launched from the aircraft to support sea-based operations.
The test will help improve the AH-1Z Viper helicopter’s targeting and strike capabilities, giving pilots newer munitions with sensor technologies to optimize performance against maritime targets.
According to Col. Byron Sullivan, the joint test fire is a “phenomenal experience,” demonstrating how the upgrade enhances the ability to use precision strikes against fast maritime targets.
“Executing this type of concept development is very critical to get it right on paper and put more effective systems in the hands of the warfighter,” VMX-1 assault support department head Maj. Thomas Hutson said in a press release.
All data collected from the test will be analyzed to determine overall system effectiveness and develop tactics, techniques, and procedures necessary for future deployment.
