Brazilian Army Requests Proposals for 155mm Wheeled Artillery System

The Brazilian Army has requested proposals to acquire a 155mm self-propelled wheeled artillery system.

The army intends to acquire two initial systems for evaluation followed by an additional 34 in multiple batches, Janes reported, citing the solicitation document.

The system is intended to replace the aging M114A1 towed howitzer as part of the Army Strategic Program Armored Forces to arm three field artillery units.

The army has over 1,400 artillery pieces, including 24 M109A3 and 24 M109A5 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzers.

However, it lacks a wheeled system.

Possible Contenders

The system should be able to fire a range of projectiles up to 40 kilometers (25 kilometers), Info Defensa revealed in 2022.

According to the Spanish news outlet, Israeli Elbit Systems and French Nexter Systems have presented their platforms, ATMOS and CAESAR.

The outlet added that local defense firm Avibras Industria Aeroespacial could also enter the competition with its 155mm/52 AP SR Tupa.

Meanwhile, the army requirements include a 6×6 or 8×8 high-mobility truck chassis with a range of 500 kilometers (310 miles) and a capacity for up to six crew members.
