Iraq sentences 3 French citizens to death for ISIS membership

The 3 were among 12 French citizens who were transferred from Syria in February

An Iraqi court on Sunday, May 26 sentenced three French citizens to death after they were found guilty of joining Islamic State, a court official said.

Captured in Syria by the Syrian Democratic Forces, Kevin Gonot, Leonard Lopez and Salim Machou are the first French ISIS members to receive death sentences in Iraq. They were among at least 12 French nationals who were transferred from Syria in February.

They have 30 days to appeal.

Previously, Iraq offered to try foreign ISIS adherents in the country if their home governments will not repatriate them, provided the Coalition pays court costs.

Iraq has already tried and sentenced several hundred foreign ISIS members, and others are in detention in Baghdad awaiting trial.

Last April, a court commuted the death sentence of a German woman of Moroccan origin, reducing her sentence to a life term.
