Sweden has chosen GKN Aerospace to develop advanced power and propulsion systems for the country’s future jet fighters.
The contract will see GKN create conceptual studies for next-generation combat aircraft based both on existing and future capabilities.
The aerospace manufacturer will work closely with the Swedish Armed Forces, Defence Materiel Administration, and Defence Research Agency on the engine system’s designs. Other manufacturers like Saab will also be involved.
The company will also seek out collaboration with partners working on a range of power and propulsion systems and disruptive technologies.
GKN Aerospace Governmental Solutions Vice President Stefan Oscarsson shared that the contract will support their customers with necessary data for the creation of new fighter planes.
“GKN Aerospace is a world-leader in engine systems and a design partner for the world’s most successful commercial engines. We are also the OEM capability for the JAS 39 Gripen C/D RM12 engines worldwide and are continuing to establish the product support capability for the RM16 engine, powering the JAS 39 Gripen E,” he said.
The deal will run from 2024 to 2025, with the potential for a follow-on phase.
Partners in Aviation Innovation
The Swedish Armed Forces considers GKN a partner in one of its major ongoing air programs.
GKN’s Trollhättan engine test facility was renovated in 2023 to host the ongoing development and maintenance of the Gripen planes’ RM12 and RM16 engines.
The force’s 200-million kronor ($18.9 million) investment enabled the site to industrialize its additive fabrication solutions, lowering the program’s environmental impact.
GKN has supported the RM12 engines since 1997.
