Australia’s Hunter-Class Frigates to Receive Customized Navigation Systems
BAE Systems Australia has selected Anschütz to deliver advanced, customized navigation systems for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN)’s Hunter-class frigates.
Anschütz will fit the anti-submarine ships with its Synapsis Warship Integrated Navigation and Bridge Systems (WINBS), a multi-functional control panel for charting, navigation, and naval radar operations.
The company will also provide RAN-specific combat management systems, engineering, program management, documentation, and training.
The agreement comes shortly after Anschütz’s installation of new naval navigation radars on RAN’s Anzac-class frigates.
WINBS’ Navigational Strength
WINBS integrates and processes data from all of its ships’ sensors and systems, including those that may be retrofitted on customer request.
Its modular take on ship systems management has been proven in other naval fleets, including the UK Royal Navy’s Type 26 and Type 31 builds.

With the contract, the marine company will expand cooperation with Australian industry, ensuring the transfer of WINBS technology and knowledge to Australia’s shipbuilding workforce.
More Improvements
Anschütz has also announced that it will equip eight Anzac-class frigates and land-based facilities with its Naval Radar NX software.
The upgrade implements defense company Terma’s transceivers for a more modernized navigational and tactical system, transforming the ships’ classic radars into a more situationally-aware navigation tool.
