The Norwegian government will deliver additional National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) to Ukraine for its defense against Russia.
Valued at 335 million Norwegian kroner ($31.9 million), part of the military aid will be sourced from the country’s stockpile to secure rapid supply.
Additional articles will be contracted with industry partners for further deliveries.
Oslo said the air defense systems play a critical role in Ukraine’s struggle with Russian forces. Due to the capability’s battle-proven advantage, Ukraine requested additional NASAMS to sustain its defense.
Before the announcement, Norway conducted “comprehensive assessments” of the deliverables to ensure the country’s own military could sustain its own reserve.
“The equipment can be sent within a relatively short time and will be crucial to strengthening the air defence against Russian attacks this winter,” Norwegian Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram stated.
“These are challenging assessments, but Ukraine has significant needs for support, and it is crucial for everyone’s safety that Russia does not succeed in its warfare.”
Norway wrote that the latest air defense tranche will incorporate four more fire directions and eight launch systems for the NASAMS platform.
“The new systems will be ordered as soon as possible,” Gram said. “The donations will take place some time ahead.”
Latest NASAMS Donation to Ukraine
Norway pledged two NASAMS and corresponding maintenance and operational training to Ukraine last March.
The delivery was made in partnership with the US government, with the systems’ development spearheaded by Kongsberg and Raytheon.
In June, Oslo announced donations of NASAMS components to Ukraine on top of 1,000 Black Hornet nano drones and “tens of thousands” of food packages.
