Irish C295 MSA Surveillance Plane Receives Viasat SATCOM Terminal

Viasat has announced the integration of its secure broadband SATCOM onto an Irish Air Corps’ Airbus C295 MSA aircraft.

The flexible broadband Ku- and Ka-band was installed on the jet in collaboration with Airbus, integrating the communication company’s flexible dual-band broadband terminal, the GAT-5530, to provide the C295 with “enhanced capability.”

The addition of the terminal will reportedly provide “greater capability through secure, reliable satellite connectivity and enhance support for a range of command, control and communication missions.”

The upgrade will boost the platform’s effectiveness in protecting Ireland’s airspace under the Irish Defence Forces. United Nations peacekeeping operations will also be supported by the upgraded platform.

The Irish Defence Forces received two C295 MSA aircraft from Airbus earlier this year.

The Enhanced Airbus C295 MSA

Airbus’ C295 MSA is a multirole surveillance aircraft that will provide Ireland with the latest “highly-reliable” tactical transport and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platform.

Viasat’s added terminal offers entire ITU Ku- and Ka-band capabilities, including 3.5GHz of military and commercial bands, providing increased “resilience” and “operational flexibility.”

“Viasat is thrilled to equip the C295 MSA aircraft with our advanced Ku- and Ka-band terminal to meet the specific needs of military customers,” Viasat Government Systems Vice President Victor Farah said.

“By combining our expertise with Airbus, we aim to enhance the operational capability, flexibility, and reliability of aircraft communications systems for military users. Our focus is on delivering secure, resilient, and scalable broadband SATCOM connectivity that is crucial for modern mission success. We’re proud of this collaboration with Airbus and its potential to meet the ever-evolving demands of the military.”

More than 280 of the enhanced multi-mission aircraft have been ordered worldwide.
