Saab has received a contract to provide support and maintenance for the Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft fleet.
Valued at 308 million Swedish krona ($30 million), the agreement covers the development and trials for rear maintenance of the country’s Gripen C/D fleet.
The contract also orders additional studies to combine maintenance support for both the Gripen C/D and E variants.
Furthermore, Saab will deliver avionics computers in conjunction with the services.
Improving Gripen Detection and Tracking Range
The award builds on an agreement signed in 2022 to ensure continued operation and capability modernization of the Swedish Gripen C/D fighters.
This involves the upgrade of the fleet’s radars and avionic systems for “extended detection and tracking range.”
Saab is currently working on the project in Linköping and Arboga.
“This upgrade will provide the Swedish Air Force with a significantly stronger fighter capability,” Saab Aeronautics Jonas Hjelm said during the initial contract signing last year.
“The contract is a big leap ahead in terms of radar performance and functionality, both for the hardware and software, and will future-proof the operational capability of Gripen C/D.”
Other Contracts With Saab
Alongside the new contract, the Swedish government awarded Saab two additional agreements totaling 220 million Swedish krona ($21 million) this year.
The orders will see the integration of the laser-guided Pod 15 to the Gripen C/D aircraft and the supply of systems and maintenance components.
