The US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) – Directed Energy Directorate is asking defense firms to perform vulnerability tests on present electronic systems to assess the effectiveness of potential high-power electromagnetic weapons.
According to an agency announcement, the testing includes preparation of a test plan that describes instrumentation and sensors to be used, as well as post-experiment reporting of results.
It also involves capturing effects and waveform data, developing surrogate electronic systems, and acquiring representative electronic subsystems.
Additionally, the AFRL wants the defense industry to plan outdoor effects tests to characterize electromagnetic weapon effectiveness.
“This work will provide data, information, and input that will be used to develop, identify, and integrate new and existing software and hardware for Battle Damage Assessment and Recuperation Time,” the service explained.
Interested firms have until May 16 to submit their proposals.
The announcement is seen as a major boost in the country’s effort to develop electromagnetic weapons. Last year, the US Navy canceled the development of the much-hyped electromagnetic railgun.
