Russian Army Receives Radar for S-500 Air-Defense System

The Russian Army has received the Yenisei radar station, which is likely to be integrated with the S-500 air-defense system, Gazeta.Ru reported, citing a source.

The air defense system is likely to enter service by year’s end, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko said in an interview last year.

The Yenisei is capable of uninterrupted operation for a longer period of time than other air defense radar systems, according to Gazeta.RU, adding that the system’s fully-automatic function excludes the possibility of human error.

It is an active-passive radar, which allows it to conduct “reconnaissance and detect air objects and issue target designations to air defense fire weapons even without broadcasting.”

Jam-Proof System

Another important advance of the platform is that its locators are equipped with remote posts, allowing them to avoid being jammed by enemy systems.

The outlet attributed many recent successes by the US Air Force to its ability to jam enemy air defense systems.

“…the success of the US Air Force’s actions in many local conflicts was ensured by the fact that practically all air defense systems of Washington’s opponents were suppressed by powerful and well-organized interference,” Gazeta.Ru wrote.

“But this does not apply to the Yenisei. The higher the interference intensity, the better the locator ties up target tracks and more accurately gives target designation to air defense fire weapons,” it added.

Another key feature of Yenisei is its ability to scan a “sector,” unlike most of the other radars that scan in circles, the outlet wrote, referring to the S-400’s 96L6 all-altitude detector radar station, which is incapable of sector scanning.

Integrated With the S-400

Russian Aerospace Forces have reportedly been impressed by the capabilities of the new platform, integrating the Yenisei with the S-400 air-defense system in addition to the existing 92N6 radar system.

Citing leadership, Gazeta.Ru explained that the Yenisei’s locator will ensure air defense system missiles strike their intended targets.

“…the Yenisei “sees” well and accompanies its launched anti-aircraft guided missiles and can very accurately determine whether the target has been hit in the event of a meeting.”

Moreover, the radar system is also capable of spotting missiles that release “false targets” after sighting enemy radars to mislead them.

“Yenisei, on the other hand, ‘sees’ such targets, can steadily accompany them and issue precise target designations on them,” Gazeta.Ru added.
